Richard Gerst, fotografo che contribuisce con il suo magnifico lavoro ad arricchire questo blog di splendide immagini ormai da qualche anno, ha l’innata capacità di scovare volti nuovi, interessanti, sexy, che corrispondono poi sempre a personaggi di talento che vale davvero la pena di conoscere.
E Richard non ci delude neanche stavolta presentandoci Carlos Gonzalez, origini cubane, ballerino, presto a Broadway nel cast di un musical attesissimo. Se il mio amico fotografo lo ha immortalato in tante foto che vedete qui sotto, io non ho resistito e l’ho contattato per chiedergli un po’ del suo mondo, ormai nella Grande Mela, ma con forti radici.

Richard Gerst, a photographer who has been contributing with his magnificent work to enrich this blog of wonderful images for some years now, has the innate talent to discover new, interesting, sexy faces, belonging to people that are always so talented that is really worth to know more about them. And also this time Richard does not disappoint presenting us Carlos Gonzalez, a dancer of Cuban origin, soon to star in Broadway in a new, and much-awaited, musical. If my friend Richard immortalized Carlos in so many photos that you can see below, I could not resist and I contacted the dancer to ask him a bit about his world, that now belongs to the Big Apple, but that reveals very strong roots. And I’m sure you too will love this rising star. So let’s Welcome Carlos and thank you Richard!
Come ti sei avvicinato al mondo dello spettacolo e quando hai deciso che sarebbe diventato il tuo lavoro?
Se ci penso, è divertente, perché crescendo a Cuba non ho mai visto il ballo come ad un possibile lavoro, era semplicemente una cosa sociale, qualcosa che si fa per stare con gli altri.
Stavo pensando di andare a scuola per diventare architetto e un giorno sono passato davanti alla sede degli studi di danza dell’università e sono stato colpito dalla curiosità. Poi ho deciso di cambiare il mio percorso scolastico per ottenere un BFA in recitazione e uno in ballo danza presso la Montclair State University.
È stata davvero una delle migliori decisioni fatte nella mia vita. Ho avuto la fortuna di avere molte grandi opportunità, ma soprattutto ho avuto in tutto questo il sostegno della mia famiglia.
How did you approach the performing arts world- and when did you decide it would become your work?
It’s funny. Growing up in Cuba I never saw dancing as a possible job, it was simply a social thing.
I was planning on going to school to be an Architect and one day I passed by the dance studios of the university and it struck my curiosity.
I then decided to change my major to get a BFA in Acting and a Dance Minor at Montclair State University. It was truly one of the best decision I’ve made in my life. I’ve been blessed with many great opportunities but most importantly I’ve had the support of my family through it all.
Quali i momenti più importanti della tua carriera sino ad ora?
Penso che ogni passo che ho fatto sia stato fondamentale per la mia carriera e per condurla a dove è ora. Ho imparato qualcosa da ogni passo. L’unica cosa che cerco sempre di mantenere attraverso tutto questo percorso è il mio essere autentico.
Most important steps in your career until now?
I think every step I have taken has been vital for my career to be where it is now. I have learned something from every step. The one thing I always try to keep through it all is to be authentic.
A cosa stai lavorando in questo momento?
Al momento sono impegnato nel lavoro dei miei sogni. Sto facendo il mio debutto a Broadway nel nuovo musical “On Your Feet” che si basa sulla vita di Gloria ed Emilio Estefan e usa tutta la musica di Gloria. La Estefan è un vero e proprio role model cubano ed è stata fonte di ispirazione per tutta la mia vita.
In questo spettacolo devo ballare quel genere di cose che non ho imparato a scuola. Questo spettacolo mi dà l’opportunità di raccontare la mia storia e questo per me è il miglior regalo. Lo spettacolo inizia le anteprime nel mese di ottobre presso il Marriott Marquis Theater.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I am working on my dream job. I’m making my Broadway debut in the new musical “On Your Feet”, which is based on the life of Gloria and Emilio Estefan and uses all of her music. Gloria Estefan is a Cuban role model that has been an inspiration my entire life.
In this show I get to dance the kind of stuff I didn’t learn in school. This show gives me the opportunity to tell MY story and that to me is the best gift. The show starts previews in October at the Marriott Marquis Theater.
Com’è stato diventare modello per un momento. . . e lavorare con Richard?
Richard è stato uno di quei momenti speciali di cui ho parlato in precedenza. Ho avuto l’onore di lavorare con lui un paio di volte e ora lo considero un amico molto speciale e vicino. Il nostro rapporto attraverso l’obiettivo si è evoluto nel corso degli anni. Ho avuto modo di scattare con lui all’inizio perché voleva scattare un ballerino e vedere cosa ne veniva fuori.
La prima volta sapevamo di esserci troppo divertiti insieme sul set e quindi abbiamo dovuto farlo ancora e ancora. Quest’ultima volta, abbiamo trascorso una giornata negli Hamptons ed è stato interessante vedere che ormai non abbiamo nemmeno bisogno di parlare tra noi durante gli scatti.
Abbiamo sviluppato una connessione e una fiducia nella visione artistica reciproca che ci permette di esplorare nuove idee, e credo che sia sempre davvero una bella cosa.
How was it to become a model for a moment . . . and working with Richard?
Richard has been one of those special steps I talked about earlier. I’ve had the honor to work with him a couple of times and now consider him a very special and close friend. Our relationship through the lens has evolved through the years.
I first got to work with him because he wanted to shoot a dancer and see what that was like. The first time we worked we knew we had way too much fun shooting, so we had to do it again and again. This last time, we spent a day at the Hamptons and it was interesting to see that by now we don’t even speak to each other during the shoot.
We have developed a connection and a trust in each other’s artistry that allows us to explore new ideas, which I think is always a beautiful thing.
Dal momento che questa webzine è di moda, ci parli del tuo stile e di com’è il tuo guardaroba?
Allora, essendo un ragazzo isolano sto sempre dalla parte rilassata delle cose. Amo indossare i colori, perché mi fanno sentire che sono sempre vicino alla spiaggia, anche se in realtà sto sudando per le strade di Manhattan.
Since this webzine is about fashion. Tell us about your style and your wardrobe.
Well, being a Island boy I’m always on the laid back side of things. Always wearing colors that make me feel that I’m next to the beach even if in reality I’m sweating through the streets of Manhattan.
Qual è la tua definizione di eleganza?
Per me l’eleganza va di pari passo con la fiducia in se stessi. Non importa quello che stai indossando puoi ancora essere elegante se cammini sicuro di quello che sei.
What’s your definition of elegance?
For me elegance is carried a lot in confidence. No matter what you’re wearing you can still have a sense of elegance if you walk with confidence.
Progetti per il futuro?
Stiamo vedendo i cambiamenti che stanno avvenendo tra Cuba e gli Stati Uniti. Ho avuto la fortuna di far parte di un paio di progetti di scambio culturale con Cuba negli ultimi anni. Mi piace pensare che ci sarà molto di più di questo tipo di lavori nel mio prossimo futuro.
Plans for the future?
Well, we’re seeing the changes that are happening between Cuba and the United States. I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a few cultural exchange projects with Cuba in the past few years. I like to think that there’s gonna be a lot more of that in the near future.
