Richard ha le qualità del talent scout e poi, ammettiamolo, vivere a New York lo aiuta nello stare a contatto con attori emergenti che si stanno facendo un nome ad esempio a Broadway.

Whenever Richard Gerst tells me about some new face or about a performer he likes and he wants to have in front of his camera, I immediately know that he is talking about someone interesting and talented. Richard has the qualities of a talent scout and then, let’s face it, living in New York helps him in staying in contact with emerging actors who are, for example, making a name in Broadway.
This is the case of Ian Paget, certainly not a beginner in the American theater scene, which was lent to pose in front of Richard Gerst’s camera in this editorial shot exclusively for stefanoguerriniarchivio.it.
Obviously I had to contact him too, to find out more about him, and next to the intimate, emotional, intense shots made by Richard, there’s also my interview to the young and cool actor.

Come ti sei avvicinato al mondo dello spettacolo, e quando lo hai fatto diventare il tuo lavoro quotidiano?
Sono nato praticamente in esso. Mio padre è in questo business e ha messo me e mia sorella in una classe di balletto, oltre a farci prendere lezioni di recitazione e canto, in giovanissima età. Siamo cresciuti a Londra, lavorando nel West End come attori bambini e quando ci siamo trasferiti negli Stati Uniti -Miami per l’esattezza – ho preso una pausa da tutto questo, perché volevo avere una infanzia normale.
Tutto è cambiato quando ho fatto l’audizione per un performing arts high school in Florida chiamata New World School of the Arts, dove sono stato accettato nel programma di recitazione. Già al secondo anno ho capito che volevo trasferirmi a New York e perseguire quella nel teatro come carriera personale.
Poi ho frequentato il Marymount Manhattan College e l’ho concluso con una laurea in recitazione e dopo sono stato ingaggiato come Arab per un tour europeo di “West Side Story”. Da allora sono stato in tre spettacoli di Broadway (“Mamma Mia”, “Leap of Faith”, “Soul Doctor”), un paio di film e un mucchio di altre divertenti serie televisive.
È piuttosto divertente fare ciò che si ama per vivere.
How did you approach the entertainment world and when did it become your daily work?
I was born into it. My dad is in the business and he put me and my sister in to ballet class as well acting and singing lessons at a very young age. We grew up in London working on the West End as child actors and when we moved to the States -Miami to be exact- I took a break from performing because I wanted to have a regular childhood.
That all changed when I auditioned for a performing arts high school in FL called New World School of the Arts where I was accepted into their acting program. By sophomore year I knew I wanted to be in NYC and pursuing Theatre as a career.
I then attended Marymount Manhattan College and graduated with a BA in Acting and upon graduating I was cast as Arab on the European tour of “West Side Story”. Since then I’ve been in three Broadway shows (“Mamma Mia”, “Leap of Faith”, “Soul Doctor”), a couple of movies and a bunch of other fun TV gigs.
It’s pretty fun doing what you love for a living.
Quali sono stati i momenti più importanti fino ad ora?
Esibirsi ai Tony Awards è stata una delle esperienze più incredibili, l’apertura di uno show a Broadway show-non c’è nulla di simile. E ho avuto anche la fortuna di lavorare al “Saturday Night Live” un po’ di volte.
Which have been the highlights til now?
Performing on the Tony’s was one of the most amazing experiences, Opening a Broadway show- there’s nothing like it. And I’ve been lucky enough to have worked on “Saturday Night Live” a bunch.

Come è stata l’esperienza di lavorare con Richard?
Mi sono divertito un sacco a scattare con Richard! Una delle esperienze più ricche che ho avuto. Ci siamo incontrati, ha chiesto un paio di cose su di me e quindi ci siamo messi subito a scattare.
Lui sa esattamente quello che vuole ed è molto accurato nello spiegare la storia che si sta scattando, è stato divertente fare delle scelte insieme e creare con lui. Entrambi abbiamo un bel senso dell’umorismo che ci ha portato a ridere un sacco tra uno scatto e l’altro.
In breve, penso che sia una grande persona che è anche un genio dietro la macchina da presa e io scatterei con lui in qualsiasi momento.
How was the experience working with Richard?
I had a blast shooting with Richard! One of the richest experiences I’ve had. We met ,he asked me a few questions about myself and then we jumped right in.
He knows exactly what he wants and he is so specific with explaining the story being shot, it was fun making choices and creating with him. We both have a dry sense of humor which made for lots of laughs in between shots.
All in all he’s a great person who is a genius behind the camera and I will shoot with him anytime.
Qual è il tuo stile quotidiano e cosa non può mancare nel tuo guardaroba?
Amo il nero e metto un sacco di capi in questo colore. Anche in total black. Può essere una semplice T-shirt nera, jeans skinny dello stesso colore, ai piedi Keds bianche o Converse nere, e con un maglione oversize sono a posto.
Impazzisco per i pantaloni con il cavallo basso e i cappotti nel mio guardaroba non saranno mai troppi. Gli amici dicono sempre che il mio stile è urban-chic post-apocalittico.
Alcuni dei miei stilisti preferiti sono Skingraft, Helmut Lang, Oak.
Which is your daily style and what cannot miss in your wardrobe?
I Love black. I wear a lot of it. Anything black. Simple black T, black skinny jeans, white Keds or black Converse, with an oversized Sweater and I’m all set.
I’m a sucker for a drop crotch pant and can never have too many coats. My friends always say my style is Post-apocalyptic Urban Chic.
Some of my favorite designers are Skingraft, Helmut Lang, Oak.
Ai quali progetti stai lavorando al momento?
Attualmente sto lavorando alle fasi iniziali di una nuova versione musicale di “Carmen”. Si basa sull’opera originale, solo che questa versione si svolge nel 1958 a Cuba e presenta anche nuove musiche e testi. Sarà diretta da Moises Kaufman, con le coreografie di Sergio Trujillo.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the beginning stages of a new musical version of “Carmen”. Based on the opera. Only this version is set in 1958 Cuba and features some new music and lyrics. Directed by Moises Kaufman and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo.
