Kate Beckett, Javier Esposito, Kevin Ryan, Richard Castle. Vi dicono nulla questi nomi? Se come me siete fan della serie televisiva “Castle”, non vi suoneranno affatto nuovi. Lo show tv ha per protagonista un famoso scrittore di gialli, Richard Castle appunto, interpretato da Nathan Fillion, che segue una squadra investigativa della omicidi del NYPD, collaborando con i suoi componenti capitanati dalla bella Kate, interpretata da Stana Katic. In onda sulla ABC negli States, da noi sul secondo canale RAI, la serie è arrivata in madre patria alla sesta stagione, noi siamo un po’ indietro, ma lo stuolo di fan non è assolutamente inferiore a quello che segue il poliziesco nel resto del mondo. Fra loro anche il sottoscritto, che tende sempre ad innamorarsi di quegli show dove avventura e crime story si mescolano ad una forte ‘chemistry’ fra i protagonisti, non a caso una certa tensione sentimentale fra Beckett e Castle arriverà a sviluppi interessanti. Ma le serie ben riuscite sono sempre quelle dove il cast è di altissimo livello e dove si crea una sintonia fra gli attori che il pubblico riesce a sentire chiaramente. Questo avviene anche in “Castle” dove accanto ad una veterana come Susan Sullivan, la ricordate ad esempio in “Dharma & Greg”, che qui interpreta la madre dello scrittore, c’è un attore come Seamus Dever, nel ruolo di Kevin Ryan, che affronta i casi sempre con un’eleganza impeccabile e rivela nello sviluppo della storia lealtà e romanticismo, che ne fanno uno dei personaggi preferiti dai fan. Quando Christopher Dibble mi ha chiesto se ero interessato ad intervistare Dever, non potevo essere più felice. Dibble ha fotografato l’attore in esclusiva per lepilloledistefano e io ho chiacchierato con lui. Seamus si rivela intelligente e interessante, scommetto che sentiremo ancora molto parlare di lui. Have you ever heard these names? If, like me, you’re a fan of the television series “Castle,” they will sound familiar. The show is about a famous mystery and crime writer, Richard Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, who follows a team of NYPD homicide detectives, working with its members led by the strong and beautiful Kate, played by Stana Katic. Airing on ABC in the United States, here in Italy you’ll find the show on the second RAI channel. The series will be airing its sixth season in the US this fall, but here we are a little behind. Regardless, the multitude of Italian fans are no less numerous than those in the rest of the world. Among them myself, since I always tend to fall in love with adventurous crime stories with a strong ‘chemistry’ between protagonists. Not surprisingly, some sentimental tension between Beckett and Castle seem to be developing. As most successful series have a cast who are undeniably talented, the cast of Castle posses more than talent, but also an harmony among the actors that the audience can clearly feel. Among the talented cast, you will find veteran actress Susan Sullivan, (you can remember her in “Dharma & Greg”) who plays the mother of Castle, as well as Seamus Dever who plays Kevin Ryan, a character that faces every situation with impeccable elegance and reveals loyalty and a romantic side, which makes him one of the fans favorite characters. When Christopher Dibble asked me if I was interested in interviewing Dever, I could not have been be happier. Dibble has photographed Seamus Dever exclusively for lepilloledistefano, and I chatted with him. Seamus proves to be smart, intelligent and interesting. Prima di tutto potresti dirmi quando ti sei avvicinato al mondo della recitazione e quando hai capito che recitare poteva diventare il tuo lavoro e la tua vita? / First of all could you tell me when did you first approach your work as an actor and when did playing became a proper work?
Ho iniziato a recitare all’età di 6 anni. Crescendo ho preso parte a moltissime recite. Il mio primo ruolo professionale è arrivato all’età di 11 anni. Recitare è una cosa che ho fatto per più di 30 anni e difficilmente passa un minuto in cui io non cerco di farlo sempre meglio. / I started acting at age 6. I was in a lot of plays growing up. My first professional role was at age 11. Acting is something I have done for more than 30 years now and hardly a moment goes by where I am not trying to be better at doing it.
Ti conosciamo bene, anche in Italia, per il tuo ruolo in ‘Castle’. Quali pensi siano le caratteristiche principali che hanno donato successo a questa serie tv? / We know you well, also in Italy, for your role in “Castle”. What do you think are the main components of the success of this tv series?
Guardo al mio modo di interagire con Nathan, Jon e Stana e ci divertiamo un sacco insieme. La gente probabilmente ci guarda tra una ripresa e l’altra e si chiede come riusciamo ad ottenere qualcosa di buono. Mi sono davvero fatto un sacco di risate con quei tre negli ultimi 5 anni. Credo che il divertimento che abbiamo nella vita reale permea i nostri personaggi e le nostre interpretazioni sullo schermo. / I look at the way I interact with Nathan and Jon and Stana and we have a lot of fun together. People probably watch us in between takes and wonder how we get anything done. I’ve had a lot of laughs with those three in the past 5 years. I think the fun we have in real life permeates into the characters and the performances onscreen.

Una cosa che posso cogliere, come spettatore, a parte l’incredibile recitazione di tutto il cast, è una sorta di legame, una chimica, esistente fra voi. È solo la mia immaginazione? / One thing that I can see, as a viewer, apart the amazing acting by all of you, is a sort of bond, a chemistry, among the cast. Is it just my imagination?
No, è che ci divertiamo proprio. È tutto vero. Sono così grato che abbiano ingaggiato per “Castle” un cast così bravo, divertente, interessante, cordiale e gentile, perché questo ci consente di interagire molto bene insieme. A questo punto siamo come una famiglia. Ci aiutiamo a vicenda. Chiedo sempre agli altri: “Cosa risulterebbe più divertente? Se faccio così o se invece dico quest’altra cosa?”. E non credo ci importi più tanto di apparire agli occhi degli altri deboli o non professionali. Vogliamo solo il meglio l’uno per l’altro e per lo show. / No, it’s that fun we have. It’s real. I’m so thankful they cast good, funny, interesting, warm, kind people in “Castle”, because we blend very well together. At this point it’s like a family. We help each other. I constantly ask them: “What’s funnier: if I do this or I do that?” And I don’t think we care anymore about looking weak or unprofessional. We all just want the best for each other and for the show.
Il tuo personaggio sembra sempre molto equilibrato e stabile. Quanto della tua personalità è convogliata nel personaggio e in che modo Kevin Ryan è totalmente diverso da te? / You character always seems very balanced and stable. How much of your personality has ended in playing this part and in which way is Kevin Ryan totally different from you?
Sono abbastanza diverso da Kevin. Penso che sia intelligente, ma non come lo sono io. Ho una conoscenza del mondo più profonda della sua. Ho avuto una maggiore istruzione e viaggiato molto di più. Penso che siamo entrambi fedeli e di sani principi e troviamo valore nel compiere un buon lavoro. Io sono anche molto più sarcastico. / I’m pretty different from Kevin Ryan. I think he’s smart, but not as smart as I am. I think I’m worldlier than him. I’ve had more education and travelled a lot more. I think we are both loyal and principled and find value in doing a good job. I’m much more sarcastic and a bigger wise ass than him.
Come ti prepari per il ruolo di poliziotto? Avete bisogno di uno specifico training, mi siete confrontati con veri agenti e investigatori? / How do you prepare for your role? Do you need to have a specifical work out, to talk and confront yourself with real cops and detectives?
Ho interagito molto con detective e poliziotti. Per lo più della polizia di Los Angeles. La maggior parte di loro sono persone normali che stanno solo cercando di fare la cosa giusta e di fare bene il loro lavoro. Uno dei nostri scrittori è un ex LAPD, così gli faccio sempre un sacco di domande. Abbiamo fatto addestramento tattico e un sacco dei nostri ragazzi della SWAT sono ex militari. Jon Huertas è in realtà un ex soldato delle forze speciali e lui è veramente bravo a consigliarci in situazioni specifiche. Ho imparato molto da lui sulle tattiche e sulla manipolazione delle armi. / I’ve had a lot of interaction with real detectives and cops. Mostly from the Los Angeles Police Department. Most of them are normal guys that are just trying to do the right thing by doing their jobs. One of our writers is former LAPD so I ask him a lot of questions. We’ve done tactical training and a lot of our SWAT guys are former military. Jon Huertas is actually a former special forces soldier and he’s really good at advising us in those situations. I’ve learned a lot from him about tactics and handling weapons.
Puoi dirci qualcosa della tua carriera fino ad ora? Qual è la cosa della quale sei più orgoglioso? / Can you tell us something about your career so far? Which is the thing you are more proud of?
Credo di essere finalmente arrivato al punto in cui posso dire di essere un buon attore. Mi ci è voluto molto tempo e ho dovuto superare un sacco di problemi. Ho avuto davvero una buona educazione, ma non è stato fino a quando ho avuto qualche esperienza di vita che ho capito veramente tutta quella tecnica. Sono abbastanza orgoglioso di essere in uno show televisivo che va avanti da molte stagioni ed è visto in tutto il mondo. Penso che questo sia qualcosa di cui essere veramente fieri. / I think I finally got to the point where I can say that I am a good actor. It took me a long time and I had to conquer a lot of problems. I had a really good education and it wasn’t until I had some life experience that I understood all that technique. I’m pretty proud to be on a television show that has run this long and is seen all around the world. That’s something to be proud of.

Non è un momento specifico in realtà, ma l’insieme complessivo dei ricordi di come ho trascorso gran parte dei mie trentanni con Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic e Jon Huertas e aver riso come un matto con quei ragazzi. / Not one specific moment really, but a collective memory of spending most of my 30s with Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic and Jon Huertas and laughing my ass with those guys.

Hai lavorato in show trasmessi nel daytime televisivo, in serie di prima serata, al cinema e a teatro. Quali sono le principali differenze tra di loro? Recitare su un palco è così diverso dall’essere su un set? / You have worked in daytime shows, in prime time shows, in movies and theatre. Which are the main differences among them? Is playing on a stage,so different than being on a set?
La differenza è il tempo a disposizione e le prove. La televisione si muove molto velocemente e quella degli spettacoli del daytime, delle soap operas, anche di più. In teatro hai la possibilità di fare molte prove e hai davvero un sacco di tempo per approfondire tutto. Se non ricordo male qualcuno ha detto che girare un film o una serie televisiva è come fare le prove per uno spettacolo teatrale che non arriverà mai alla prima. / The difference is time and rehearsal. Tv moves so fast and daytime tv moves even faster. In theatre you get so much rehearsal and really a lot of time to allow things to get deeper. I think someone said that shooting a film or a tv series is like rehearsing for a play that will never premiere.
Qual è il ruolo che sogni di interpretare? Qualcosa in cui ti piacerebbe recitare, ma che non ha mai avuto la possibilità di farlo? / Which is your dream-role? Something that you would like to play, but never had the chance to do.
Ho sentito che lo sceneggiatore Robert Towne ha in programma un terzo “Chinatown”. Mi piacerebbe interpretare Jake Gittes. (Ruolo che nel primo “Chinatown” di Roman Polanski è stato di Jack Nicholson, ndr). / I hear that Robert Towne has a third “Chinatown” movie. I’d like to play Jake Gittes. (Role that in the first “Chinatown” by Roman Polanski was portrayed by Jack Nicholson).

Dal momento che questo blog è molto legato allo stile, potresti dirmi qual è la tua definizione di eleganza? Come è il tuo stile? Il tuo personaggio in “Castle” indossa spesso completi eleganti, cosa invece non può mancare nel tuo guardaroba personale? / Since this blog is a lot related to style, could you tell me what’s your definition of elegance? How is your style? Your character on “Castle” is often wearing suits, what cannot be missing in your personal wardrobe?
Mi piace uno stile classico: abiti di lana, colori ben definiti, scarpe a punta. Ma cerco anche di non rimanere bloccato in certi stilemi. Un sacco di ragazzi scelgono colori rassicuranti come il blu e il nero, io invece cerco di ricordare a me stesso di essere più avventuroso e indossare più viola e rosa. Penso spesso di essere nato nel periodo sbagliato. Probabilmente sarei stato più a mio agio negli anni ’40 o ’50. Mi piace indossare cravatte e ne ho davvero troppe a casa. L’anno scorso sono andato in missione per scoprire più modi possibili per annodarle. Chiamatela: “una ribellione contro la tirannia del Nodo Windsor”. In realtà ci sono 86 modi per annodare una cravatta e credo nella mia ricerca di averne inventati due in più. Li ho chiamati il nodo”Ryan Singolo” e “Ryan doppio”. Sì, la cravatta è probabilmente un elemento dal quale non potrei vivere senza. / I like a classic sensibility: wool suits, solid colors, cap toe shoes. But I also try not to get stuck in that world. A lot of guys go to the default colors of blue and black but I try to remind myself to be more adventurous and wear more purples and pinks. I kind of feel like I was born in the wrong time period. I probably would have been more at home in the 40s or the 50s. I like wearing ties and have way too many of them at home. Last year I went on a mission to find as many ways to tie a tie. Call it “A Rebellion against the tyranny of the Windsor Knot”. There are actually 86 ways to tie a tie and I believe that I invented two more in my search. I call them “The Single Ryan” and “The Double Ryan” knots. Yes, the tie is probably an item I couldn’t live without.
Piani / progetti / sogni per il futuro? / Plans/projects/ dreams for the future?
Voglio continuare a vedere quanto può continuare “Castle” e poi cercare di interpretare un ruolo da protagonista nel prossimo show televisivo. Non credo che il mio lavoro in “Castle” abbia nemmeno scalfito la superficie di ciò che posso fare. E non vedo l’ora di mostrarlo a tutti. / I’m going to see how long “Castle” can go and then play the lead in my next TV show. I don’t think Castle has even scratched the surface of what I can do. I can’t wait to show everybody.
