Da sempre sono un grande fan di Rankin, lo seguo da quando mi sono innamorato delle riviste di moda, da quando ho scoperto le realtà indipendenti, ricordiamo ad esempio che questo grandissimo fotografo è stato uno dei fondatori di Dazed & Confused.
Ovviamente l’ho seguito nelle sue molte avventure, nel mio ormai famigerato Archvio Guerrini ci sono tanti suoi libri e sono un grande estimatore della sua ultima avventura, cioè il magazine Hunger, che quando fu lanciato aveva anche un sottotitolo azzeccatissimo: The bi-annual magazine for the culturally and visually hungry. Poteva non rispecchiarmi?
In occasione della prossima fashion week maschile verrà presentato a Milano il suo nuovo film “X”, è stata questa per me la scusa perfetta per raggiungerlo (lo avevo già intervistato qui) e chiedergli un po’ di cose sul suo giornale.
Ne è nato il racconto di alcune su impressioni e aneddoti legati alle ultime cover di Hunger. Trovate qui sotto le immagini e quello che mi ha raccontato Rankin. Io posso solo concludere esprimendo quanto mi faccia felice che from time to time un personaggio così ci venga a trovare su questo sito.

I have always been a big fan of Rankin, I have been following him and his work since the day I fell in love with fashion magazines, since I discovered the independent world of publishings, and I must remember to you all here that this awesome photographer was one of the founders of Dazed & Confused.
Obviously I have followed him in his many adventures, in my ‘now infamous’ Archvio Guerrini there are so many of his books, but I am especially a great admirer of his latest project, the magazine Hunger, which had when it was first launched a perfect subtitle: The bi-annual magazine for the visually and culturally hungry. How could it not be perfect for me?
At the next men’s fashion week in Milan will be presented his new film “X”, so this was for me the perfect excuse to get in touch with Rankin (I had already interviewed him here) and to ask him something about his magazine.
The result is the story of some of impressions and anecdotes about the latest covers of Hunger. Find below the pictures and what he told me. I can only conclude by expressing how much makes me happy that from time to time a man I admire so much can find a bit of his time to appear on this site.

James McAvoy & Imogen Poots:
“Per la sesta uscita del giornale, il nostro Mighty Blighty issue, ho scattato 20 cover diverse – tutte le persone che io e il mio team abbiamo pensato potessero rappresentare il meglio della Gran Bretagna – dal cinema alla musica, dalla moda all’arte. Alcuni dei miei preferiti del gruppo sono stati James McAvoy e Imogen Poots. James è un attore così brillante che la sua intensità esce totalmente dalla copertina. Lo abbiamo messo a nudo, riducendo il suo outfit ad una semplice canottiera bianca, ma lui nello scatto sembra continuare a tenere gli occhi addosso di chi guarda e colpisce il lettore, mettendolo quasi a disagio. Imogen d’altra parte rappresenta completamente l’alta moda (quella giacca Louis Vuitton è arrivata sul sedile di un Eurostar quella mattina stessa!), ma tanto quanto il suo look sembra sistemato alla perfezione, quanto la sua personalità e la sua natura eccentrica fanno spiccare questa cover e lei sembra venir fuori dalla pagina. Ed aggiungo che entrambi sono stati un piacere da fotografare.”
“For issue six, our Mighty Blighty issue, I shot 20 covers – all people that the team and I felt represented the best of Britain – from film to music to fashion to art. Some of my favourites from the bunch were James McAvoy and Imogen Poots. James is such a brilliant actor that the intensity really comes through on his cover. He’s stripped back in just a white vest but it’s like he got his eye fixed on you and it’s quite unnerving. Imogen on the other hand was completely high fashion (that Louis Vuitton jacket travelled over on its own Eurostar seat that morning!) but as well put together as her look is, her personality and kooky nature elevate the cover and make her jump from the page. Both were a pleasure to shoot.”
BANKS:
“Tutti in ufficio aveva avevano ascoltato BANKS probabilmente per circa un anno prima che arrivasse per scattare la sua cover. La sua musica ha qualcosa di crudo, un’atmosfera così malinconica, che volevo replicare in qulache modo in una copertina dark, e quale modo migliore che utilizzando PVC nero e filo spinato?”
“Everyone in the office had been listening to BANKS for probably about a year before she came in for her cover shoot. Her music has such a raw, melancholic vibe to it that I wanted to replicate that in a dark cover, and what better way than with black PVC and barbed wire?”
Fearless issue, Grace Bol:
“Per il settimo numero di Hunger abbiamo usato prevalentemente modelle per la prima volta e per questo volevo creare copertine che colpissero in tutta la loro forza, che avessero un grande impatto, che fossero una dichiarazione di intenti. Qui Grace Bol sembra così potente e forte – infatti è quasi regale – che incarna tutto ciò che il numero voleva rappresentare: totale impavidità, coraggio.”
“Issue seven of Hunger was the first time that we used predominantly models and because of this I really wanted to create covers that hit you full force, that made a big impact, a statement. Here Grace Bol looks so powerful and strong -almost regal in fact – that she embodies everything that the issue was about: fearlessness.”
We’ve Got Issues, Cora Emanuel:
“Sulla scia del settimo numero, abbiamo usato ancora una line up di sole modelle per l’ottava uscita di Hunger, ma come per la volta precedente non volevamo giocare sul sicuro. Non sono io e neanche Hunger è così. Vedere la perfezione totale sulle copertine è per me molto noioso, così ho chiesto alle nostre Cover Girls di lasciarsi andare ed essere veramente se stesse – fare facce stupide, ridere, gettare le mani in aria e ballare – e le cover risultanti sono decisamente molto più fresche, e anche molto più reali.”
“Following on from issue seven, we also used an all model line up for issue eight, but again, I didn’t want to play it safe. That’s not me and it’s not Hunger either. Seeing perfection on covers is boring to me so instead I asked our cover girls to really let themselves go – pull silly faces, laugh, throw their hands in the air and dance – and the resulting covers are ones that feel so much fresher, and much more real.”
