New York Fashion Week: la sfilata di Marlon Gobel fotografata da Richard Gerst

Lo scorso 8 febbraio durante la New York Fashion Week si è tenuta la sfilata per la stagione f/w 2013-14 di Marlon Gobel, stilista che ho conosciuto grazie a Richard Gerst, fotografo che ospito con piacere nel mio blog. Richard mi ha raccontato proprio pochi minuti prima di uscire di casa che stava andando a fotografare lo show e io gli ho chiesto se avesse voglia poi di condividere alcuni scatti con noi. Ed eccoli qui, una collezione military e utility inspired, che ha visto sfilare top come Cory Bond, Sebastian Sauve, Chad White e il nostro amato Nick Ayler. Quando ho visto le belle foto, non ho resistito a chiedere al fotografo di raccontarmi qualcosa sulla tecnica usata. / On the 8 of February during New York Fashion Week was held the show for the season f / w 2013-14 Marlon Gobel, a designer I discovered thanks to Richard Gerst, a photographer who I host with pleasure in my blog. Richard told me just  a few minutes before leaving the house that he was going to photograph the show and I asked him if he would then share some shots with us. And here they are,showing  a collection inspired by military and utility style, which has seen been worn on the catwalk by topmodels such as Cory Bond, Sebastian Sauve, Chad White and our beloved Nick Ayler. When I saw the beautiful pictures, I could not resist asking the photographer to tell me something about the technique used.

“Ho deciso, con il tema della sfilata e i riferimenti militari e classici, che volevo scattare con una vecchia Leica e utilizzare una velocità di pellicola più lenta – simile a quella che si rese disponibile negli anni ’30 – ’40 per il colore. Inoltre, ho deciso di scattare in color reversal per un look vintage. / I decided with the theme of the show and reference to military and classics, I would shoot this with an older leica and use a slower film speed – similar to what became available in the 40’s – 50’s for color. Also- I shot it on positive color reversal film for a vintage look.”

E non potevo non cogliere l’occasione di fare alcune domande al designer./ And I took the opportunity also to ask some questions to the designer.

Quando e come hai iniziato la tua etichetta? / When and how did you begin your own label?
Ho iniziato la mia collezione alla fine del 2009, dopo aver lavorato con Thom Browne per 3 anni dal lancio del suo marchio e poi con la guida di Men’s Vogue sono passato da Michael Bastian dove ho lavorato per 2 anni e mezzo. Solo allora mi sono sentito pronto, avevo solo bisogno di un’ultima cosa, cioè chiedere alla Signora Diane Von Furstenberg come Presidente del CFDA il permesso di unirmi ufficialmente alla Moda Americana, inutile dirlo, ma dopo un incontro con lei, me lo ha concesso (aggiungo che nessuno lo ha avuto mai fatto prima). / I started my Collection in the end of 2009 after working with Thom Browne for 3 years since his inception of his brand and then with the guidance of Men’s Vogue moving to Michael Bastian for 2.5 years. Only then did I feel I was ready, I only needed one last thing and that was to ask Ms. Diane Von Furstenberg as the CFDA President for her permission to join American fashion, needless to say that, after a meeting with her she granted it (adding that none had ever done that before).

Puoi raccontarmi qualcosa riguardo al tema della sfilata? / Could you tell me something about the theme of the show?
Questa utopica, o meglio distopica, collezione si rilaziona con le conseguenze dell’inaugurazione di un governo”Dark Green”, che ha introdotto “La punizione del lusso” secondo le radicali convinzioni su come il mondo dovrebbe essere. “The Punishment of Luxury” è un racconto scritto da Michael Carson. Sul punto di una apocalisse, l’umanità si è riorganizzata in cinque fazioni, ognuna delle quali si comporta e vive guidata da un certo tipo di valore. Quelli che credono che la società sia crollata a causa della cupidigia ha costituito la fazione di Abnegazione (Quelli che non pensano a se stessi), che hanno rifiutato pratiche considerate egoistiche e si sono impegnati ad agire altruisticamente. Coloro che ritengono che il crollo sia avvenuto a causa dell’ignoranza si sono votati all’Erudito (gli Intelligenti), guidati in un percorso senza fine di acquisizione di sapere e conoscenza. Coloro che ritengono che la doppiezza umana abbia portato alla fine del mondo si sono votato alla banidera del Candore (gli Onesti), impegnandosi a dire sempre quello che pensano. Coloro che ritengono che la violenza sia stata la radice del collasso della società sono diventati membri della Concordia (i Pacifici), che tengono il manto della pace a tutti i costi. E, infine, coloro che ritengono che la radice di tutti i loro problemi siano derivati dalla viltà hanno formato la tribù degli Intrepidi (i Coraggiosi), la fazione dei temerari e dei forti. / This utopian, or rather dystopian, collection deals with the consequences of the inauguration of a “Dark Green” government which has introduced “The Punishment of Luxury” according to their radical beliefs about what the world should look like. “The Punishment of Luxury” is a short story written by Michael Carson. From the brink of apocalypse, humanity has reorganized itself into five factions, each of which uphold and live by a single core value. Those who believe society fell apart because of greed formed the faction of Abnegation (the Selfless), sworn off of practices considered selfindulgent and pledged to act selflessly. Those who believe the collapse was due to ignorance pledged themselves to the Erudite (the Intelligent), sworn to a never-ending path of complete knowledge acquisition. Those who feel that human duplicity wreaked havoc in the world took the banner of Candor (the Honest), pledging to always speak their minds and the truth. Those who feel that aggression was the root of society’s collapse became the members of Amity (the Peaceful), taking the mantle of peace at all costs. And finally, those who feel that the root of all their problems stemmed from cowardice formed the tribe of the Dauntless (the Brave), the faction of the courageous and strong.

Questa è la prima volta che collabori con Richard Gerst , quale è stata la tua reazione quando hai visto i risultati della scelta di Gerst di scattare con una macchina fotografica d’epoca e in pellicola? / This is the first time you collaborated with Richard Gerst – what was your reaction when you saw the results of Gerst’s choice to shoot with a vintage camera and film?
Nulla è più lussuoso che usare la pellicola per scattare moda in questo momento! Richard è un fotografo che non è interessato a catturare solo un evento, ma a cogliere quel momento che diventa Arte e si sente fiducioso a tal punto di permettersi il lusso di scattare con vera pellicola e nulla è più sofisticato di questo! Richard ha veramente capito la mia filosofia dietro a “The Punishment of Luxury” per la sfilata f/w 2013! / Nothing is more Luxurious then the use of real film in fashion today! Richard is a photographer who is not interested in just capturing an event but finding the moment that makes that moment ART and feels confident to use the luxury of real film to get it and nothing is more sophisticated then that! Richard truly understood my f/w 2013 show statement of “The Punishment of Luxury”!
